Alan John Amos lives with his wife Clare in Shroton, Dorset, UK. He writes poetry, and composes music. He is a priest of the Church of England, and a Canon ( Emeritus ) of Rochester Cathedral. He is retired, and continues to serve in local parishes of the Iwerne Valley Benefice ( Diocese of Salisbury ) and also in Geneva in the Diocese in Europe. He began his ministry in Hoxton, in London’s East End, in 1969, and served as a missionary in Lebanon and Syria from 1973 – 82, experiencing several years of the civil war in Lebanon. He was appointed OBE in 1980. Alan married Clare, whom he met when she was Course Director at St. George’s College, Jerusalem, in January 1978. They lived together in Beirut until 1982, when Clare was appointed to teach biblical studies at Westcott House in the Cambridge Federation of Theological Studies, and Alan taught liturgy and pastoral studies, and was Vice-Principal at Westcott from 1985 -1989. He developed the first course in introduction to Islam to be taught in the Cambridge Federation. After leaving Westcott, Alan and Clare have worked in theological education and ministry in various contexts; Alan was for thirteen years Trust Chaplain at the Medway NHS Trust at Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham, Kent. There then followed four years with responsibility for a group of six parishes including Newington near Sittingbourne, Kent. Alan then joined Clare in Geneva where she was working with responsibility for interfaith relations with the World Council of Churches. They continue their links with Geneva as well as being at home in Dorset.
